Facing Cancer as a Friend: How to Support Someone who has Cancer

How do you respond when someone you know tells you they’re facing cancer?

So often, people feel at a loss for words. How can you make a difference at such a difficult time in your friend’s life? You don’t have to feel helpless. Facing Cancer as a Friend will show you what to say (and what not to say). You’ll learn how to use your gifts and strengths to support your friend when they need it most.

When my husband was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in 2012 we were shocked. How could that happen to us? In the years since we have learned a lot. I’ve written extensively about living with cancer with the goal of giving others knowledge that we had to gain the hard way. My books are for patients, caregivers, and anyone who wants to make the lives of someone going through a life altering diagnosis easier.

I hope that you’ll read my books, share them, and be changed by their message of hope.

Praise for Facing Cancer as a Friend

“I love your book and have read it twice. I also have forwarded the information to the Oncology Department at our hospital so they can pass the information on to their patients to buy the book. They liked it very much and look forward to the next one.”

It’s a great read if you know of anyone who has cancer or a cancer victim’s caregiver. She has a great Christian insight as to what questions to ask, answers to questions, gifts for the cancer person, and also for the caregivers, a lot of thoughtful ideas to help you get through each day. It brought me some peace of mind.”

More Reasons to Buy Facing Cancer as a Friend…

“Facing Cancer as a Friend is one of the most practical and helpful guides for walking beside someone facing cancer that I have read. As someone who has several friends that have recently faced this horrendous disease, I frequently read blog articles detailing “How to help” or “What not to say” or, more importantly, “What TO say to someone facing cancer”. I love that this book takes all of those articles I’ve read (along with a whole lot more information!!) and puts them all in one place for easy reference and ideas. Heather had many new ideas that I had not seen before which allow me many additional ways to bless someone facing a serious illness. What I especially appreciate is her emphasizing that ALL help is appreciated – and her encouragement for the reader to use his/her particular favorites and gifts to help out.

I also appreciate Heather’s candor in helping readers figure out what and what not to say. Tips about visiting, phone calls, as well as sending cards and e-mails, were also very helpful.

Heather has filled this book with stories from her own family’s personal battle with cancer that help these ideas take life and show them in action. She also includes some special things people have done that especially blessed her family on hard days. She writes from the perspective of a Christian which infuses her book with hope. The ideas are practical enough that someone who does not share her faith would find it equally helpful.”

“Jam-packed with practical advice!”

“This book is jam-packed with practical advice for anyone who has a friend with cancer. Heather tells you from personal experience: what to say or not to say, how to help, how to handle visits and phone calls, practical gift-giving ideas, and much more.
